Symbiosis - symbolism

Growth - decay - regrowth

Robert John Holland maintains a symbiotic relationship with the world. He observes and describes the processes of building and "unbuilding".

Symbiosis is defined as "an interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, usually to the advantage of both."

With his work he breathes, and in his relationship with the land he lives.

About the artist:
Robert John Holland’s natural affinity for watercolor painting may come from his background as a water well driller. Both professions require a keen application of physics and engineering. The chore of a driller is to find mechanisms to control what you cannot see, to provide assistance, a vision into the unknown and to create a situation of predictability out of hydraulically moving formations.

Experimenting with watercolor, even in public places, in rural WNY where Holland drilled wells, was a natural progression of the ‘water related” arts.

Holland says “I trust my hand to release what my mind does not yet know. I accept this calligraphy trusting in a universal truth of composition to bring clarity to intention.”
